I first met Katie and John the day of their engagement shoot.
I had been looking forward to it ever since Katie mentioned that they wanted to do photos in the exact location where they first met. Center House at the Marine Barricks in D.C. “8th & I” where John has been stationed.
I have sat here and tried and tried and hopelessly failed at eloquently explaining why ‘8th and I’ is such a unique post in the Marine Corps and why Center House is such an honor to be invited to.
So instead I’m going to cheat and cut and paste a blurb from their website.
“A primary mission of 8th & I is to participate in thousands of ceremonies, both in Washington, D.C., at Arlington National Cemetery, and at various locations throughout the world. One of the most worthwhile events in Washington is the Friday “Evening Parade,” a stirring event which is presented from May until September. It is viewed by thousands of people every week, and is one of the most popular events in Washington. It features the U.S. Marine Band, the U.S. Marine Drum & bugle Corps, the Silent Drill Platoon, and over 200 Marines, all hand-picked for service at 8th & I.”
One of those hand picked Marines .. John!
“More than just officers’ mess or quarters for Barracks Officers, Center House is a tradition; a way of life for Barracks Officers and their guests. The elegant first floor sets the scene for social activities that often include the Commandant and his lady, many distinguished military, civilian guests and government officials.”
One of those honored guests.. Katie!
Picture it .. Following the Evening Parade a handsome, uniformed Marine looks across the bar to see a beautiful woman smiling at him.. The music stops, the crowd disappears, their love is immediate.
Well, I don’t know if that’s actually how it happened but that’s definitely what I pictured when they were telling me about that night.
But I’ve always been a sucker for a good ‘how we met’ story.
I am even more excited to shoot their wedding now!
